Every year around July 16, Torrevieja comes alive for the Virgen del Carmen Festival, honouring the patron saint of fishermen and sailors. The festivities blend deep-rooted maritime traditions with vibrant community spirit, making this event one of the highlights of the summer calendar.
The days leading up to the main date include family-friendly activities such as a children’s show, a paella contest, and music in the port area. On the main day, the city starts early with a musical “Diana,” followed by solemn mass in the evening and a grand land procession through the streets. Although the sea procession has been suspended this year due to harbour works, the land part remains a moving tribute.
Streets are decorated, music fills the air, and both locals and visitors join together in celebration. With colourful parades, mariner’sodds, and community-wide participation, the festival beautifully honours Torrevieja’s seafaring heritage and invites everyone to share in the joy and tradition of the coast.
